2020 Musto OptiAus Championships

Two junior sailors from the Port Denison Sailing Club recently sailed in the 2020 Musto Australian Optimists Championships held at the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria. There were 233 competitors from 8 countries, competing in the week long event.

Melbourne most definitely provided our sailors with a range of weather, from freezing cold to sweltering heat. They came up against mixed conditions on the water, from light winds to 30 knots plus!

Jack Scharf competed in the Open event and placed 12th overall in the Silver Fleet. The Open section of the regatta included 131 sailors from 8 countries. This was his first Open Fleet Nationals and what an amazing venue to be sailing from. Jack found the wind to be one of his biggest issues and capsized more than usual. He worked well on the lighter wind days though which is usually his least favourable weather. Jack has come away with a greater understanding of the expectations of the Open Fleet and is even more driven to train hard this year to prepare for the Perth Nationals in 2021.

Tom Darwen competed at his very first Nationals in the Green Fleet. There were 23 sailors competing in this Fleet, including one international. Imagine going to your first Nationals and navigating around boats in the shipping channel! Tom needs to be commended for his hard work leading up to the event, his strong sportsmanship and giving his best. Tom placed first in one of his races and was so excited! Great work Tom on your very first Nationals.
